Introduction

Operational excellence applied to steel.

The steel industry forgives nothing: a continuous process in which every unplanned stoppage costs hundreds of thousands of euros, massive energy costs, and campaigns whose duration determines profitability. Operational excellence therefore takes a specific form here: TPM on critical equipment (converters, continuous casters, rolling stands), OEE management line by line, reduction of scrap and downgrades, synchronisation between the steelworks and the rolling mill. A typical assignment: on an integrated European site, our workstreams significantly raised the OEE of 3 critical lines and sharply reduced scrap — with fully autonomous teams by the end of the assignment. Our 34 technical articles on steelmaking reflect this hands-on expertise.

🔥

Continuous processes mastered

Blast furnaces, converters, continuous casters: we know the constraints of continuous firing — you cannot stop the plant to "run a project", improvements are made while running.

🧱

Refractories included

A core SXE competence: refractory performance (campaign life, cost per tonne) is part of the operational excellence equation in steelmaking.

⚡

Energy as a KPI

Specific consumption (GJ/t), charging practice, heat recovery: energy is an improvement area in its own right.

What sets us apart

Why SXE Consulting for the steel industry?

Few consultancies genuinely know the steel industry from the inside — it is where we come from.

🏭

Steel in our DNA

Our consultants have worked on European steel sites — blast furnaces, steelworks, rolling mills. They speak in tonnes, campaigns and GJ/t, not only OEE.

🧱

Process + refractories

Integrated refractory expertise (specifications, supervision, campaigns) complements operational excellence: a complete view of the cost per tonne.

📈

Contractual results

Significant gains in OEE, scrap and campaign life: our steel industry references are measured and verifiable.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

How can the OEE of a steel line be improved without stopping it?+
That is the specificity of continuous processes: workstreams are run while the plant is running. Data-based loss analysis (stoppages, slowdowns, downgrades), targeted TPM reliability work during planned shutdowns, shift-by-shift management routines. The gains come from better shutdown preparation and fewer disruptions — not from additional stoppages.
Which KPIs do you track in the steel industry?+
The classics (OEE, scrap, downgrades) plus industry-specific KPIs: campaign life, refractory cost per tonne, specific consumption (GJ/t), metallic yield and rework rate. Targets are contractually agreed at the initial audit.
Do you work on refractory campaigns?+
Yes — this is a core SXE competence: specifications, supplier qualification, supervision of refractory lining, optimisation of campaign life (with significant extensions in our reference cases). Operational excellence in steelmaking includes this dimension.
Do you work with processors and not only with producers?+
Yes: cold rolling, coating, tubes, wire drawing, finishing. The challenges differ (format changeovers, surface quality, service level) but the method adapts — SMED and flow work deliver quick gains there.
What results have you achieved at comparable sites?+
Measured references: significant gains in the OEE of critical lines, in scrap and in unplanned stoppages, plus a significant extension of ladle campaign life. Every assignment is contractually committed to its own KPIs, measured monthly.
