In France, according to the Industry 4.0 Barometer of 2023, published by Wavestone in partnership with France Industrie and BPI France Le Hub, manufacturers are making progress in adopting digital technologies, although obstacles remain, particularly in terms of infrastructure and data management.

Digital transformation as a driver of industrial performance

industry 4.0 is distinguished by the integration of advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI) and process automation. These digital tools improve the productivity, traceability and agility of industrial operations. Companies that succeed in digitally transforming their production processes benefit from greater flexibility and better responsiveness to market fluctuations.

One of the major advantages of digital transformation is improved digital continuity, which allows information to be managed smoothly at every stage of production. For example, digital twins provide a real-time view of industrial processes, enabling better decision-making and fewer errors. According to the Industry 4.0 Barometer 2023, the adoption of these technologies is gradually becoming the norm, even if their large-scale deployment is sometimes limited by obsolete infrastructure.

The challenges of digital transformation

Despite the obvious advantages of digital transformation, the Industry 4.0 Barometer stresses that many French manufacturers are still struggling to reach the technological maturity needed to take full advantage of these innovations. Only 7% of the companies surveyed in the study manage to deploy their digital solutions at the planned pace. Ageing IT infrastructure, combined with a shortage of digital skills, is holding back the development of artificial intelligence and data management.

Data management is a key aspect of digital transformation. Although companies are investing heavily in data collection and analysis systems, the quality and accessibility of that data still pose problems. The lack of data reliability makes it difficult to exploit predictive analytics tools or artificial intelligence, thereby limiting their impact on the optimisation of production chains.

Digital transformation and sustainability

Another important aspect of digital transformation is its role in sustainability. Digital initiatives contribute directly to reducing the carbon footprint of industry, a central issue for French companies. The Industry 4.0 Barometer 2023 shows that 57% of manufacturers have already launched digitalisation projects to reduce their CO2 emissions. Thanks to digital technologies, companies can monitor and optimise their energy consumption, reduce non-quality and integrate recycled materials into their production processes.

The use of tools such as energy management systems (EMS) or carbon management systems (CMS) enables companies to better understand their environmental impact and adapt their strategies accordingly. These initiatives are encouraged by regulations such as the BEGES (Bilan des Émissions de Gaz à Effet de Serre), which requires companies to track and reduce their emissions.

In conclusion, digital transformation is an essential lever enabling French companies to meet the competitiveness and sustainability challenges of Industry 4.0. However, to take full advantage of these technologies, they must modernise their infrastructure and invest in training their staff. Working with support ecosystems, such as those offered by France Industrie and BPI France Le Hub, can help companies overcome these obstacles and accelerate their digital transformation.

Source: Wavestone's Industry 4.0 Barometer 2023.

La transformation digitale est un facteur essentiel pour les entreprises souhaitant rester compétitives dans le contexte actuel de l’industrie 4.0.
